Azores Adventure with Caley Vanular & Anna Gudauskas
This assignment took me to the Azores with Caley Vanular and Anna Gudauskas to produce imagery for the Billabong Women Adventure Division line. The three of us traveled and produced the shoot independently, keeping the process simple and efficient.
Caley and Anna were involved in shaping the concept and logistics. I handled all photography, including surf, lifestyle, and environmental images. Working without a larger crew gave us the flexibility to adapt quickly to weather, light, and surf conditions.
The island itself was a big part of the work. Volcanic terrain, black sand beaches, rugged coastline, and natural hot springs created a wide range of visual options in a small area. The texture and contrast of the landscape made it one of my favorite places I have photographed and shaped the final look of the images more than any planned shot list.
Both athletes brought strong creative awareness to the project. Caley’s background in snowboarding, creative direction, and visual art translated easily to working in unfamiliar terrain. Anna’s experience in the ocean and comfort in shifting conditions kept the water work focused and efficient. That shared understanding made the collaboration feel natural and grounded.
