Winter Surf on the Big Island with Anna Gudauskas

These photos are from one winter on the Big Island with Anna Gudauskas.

I grew up here, so shooting on the Big Island feels natural to me. Knowing how to move around, read conditions, and find quieter places makes it easier to keep things simple and flexible. We spent our days surfing, exploring back roads, and stopping when the light felt right. No heavy production. Just moving through the island and letting things unfold.

Most of what we shot came from places you do not stumble on by accident. Timing and local knowledge matter here, especially if you want images that feel specific to the Big Island and not just Hawaii in general. At the time of this shoot, Anna was a Billabong A/DIV ambassador. The focus was capturing her in a place she returns to often, in between surf sessions and small adventures.

This is the kind of work I enjoy most here. Low key shoots. Real conditions. Images shaped by place.
