Nique Miller for Billabong Women’s

In 2022, I photographed Afro Latina surfer Nique Miller in Waikiki on Oahu during a shoot produced and creative directed by Patti People for Billabong Women. The larger project explored Nique’s background and career, but this edit focuses on her surfing. At the time, she was one of the few Afro Latina surfers being featured in major surf campaigns. She now surfs independently, outside of brand sponsorships, and these images remain a record of that period.

I appreciated being hired as a woman to photograph another woman in the water. That shared understanding shaped how the session unfolded and what moments were prioritized. The images are simple surf photographs, made from inside the lineup, focused on how Nique actually surfs rather than how she is presented.
